The Drive to Sophi Beach

Welcome! We are so excited to host you. The drive from Phoenix to Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point) is a beautiful journey through the Sonoran Desert. Getting here is simple, and once you see the white sands of Sophi Beach, you'll know every mile was worth it.

Step-by-Step from Phoenix

Start by heading West on I-10. You'll transition to AZ-85 South, which takes you directly through the charming desert landscapes towards the border. Use the map on this page to visualize the route—it's a straight shot once you're on the 85!

First Stop (optional): Gila Bend

This is a popular choice for a quick meal or a charge. Stop in Gila Bend for Tesla Superchargers and various food options to fuel up before the final stretch.

Next Stop: Why

Continue down to Why, AZ. We recommend fueling up here and a quick visit to the 'Why Not' store for snacks. From here, you'll head south to enter Mexico through the Lukeville/Sonoyta border crossing.

Driving Through Sonoyta

Once you cross the border, you are in Sonoyta. Drive slowly and strictly follow the speed limits. Signs will change from MPH to KPH (kilometers per hour). It is very important to wait until you are completely out of town and see the higher speed limit signs before you accelerate.

A Note on Local Vendors

While driving through town, you may see people offering to wash windows or sell local items. A polite 'no thank you' with a smile is perfectly fine. You do not need to stop; simply continue driving safely to your destination.

Staying Calm & Prepared

In the rare event you are pulled over for a traffic violation, stay calm and respectful. While it's rare, some guests keep a small amount of cash on hand for on-the-spot fines. Most often, a careful speed through town prevents this entirely.

Lukeville Border Crossing Hours

6:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Important: The border closes strictly at 8:00 PM. You must be across the line before this time, as being in the queue does not guarantee entry after closing.

The drive is easy, the roads are open, and the beach is waiting. We promise the sunset over the Sea of Cortez is worth the journey! If you have any questions at all along the way, please reach out to us—we're here to help.
